Modi in fact met Advani after meeting Joshi in Delhi and sources say the meeting was positive. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is also expected to meet Advani and is likely to advise him to clarify the allegations he made in the letter.
Sources say attempts are being made by the BJP-RSS combine to coax Advani into clarifying his allegation on BJP leaders looking after their own interests. Sources also add that Rajnath Singh is upset with Congress leader Ajay Maken's attempt of using Advani's letter to hit out at the BJP.
Referring to Advani's letter, Maken had on Monday said, "First of all he (Modi) should reply to the most senior leader in his party. He has to answer his party's senior leaders. Then he has to answer to and establish himself among the NDA allies, who are falling apart. Then he has to explain whether his stature is rising and falling. His being a challenge to Congress comes after all these," he said. Quoting from Advani's letter, he said that the senior BJP leader did not say this only about Modi but all other leaders of his party.
The letter was written by Advani when he resigned from all party posts following Modi's elevation as the BJP campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Advani, in his letter, had written, "I no longer have the feeling that this is the same idealistic party created by Dr Mookerji, Deen Dayalji, Nanaji and Vajpayeeji whose sole concern was the country, and its people. Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas."
However, later Advani had withdrawn his resignation following a telephonic talk with Bhagwat and persuasion by BJP leaders. Following is the full text of the letter that Advani wrote:
Dear Shri Rajnath Singhji,
All my life I have found working for the Jana Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party a matter of great pride and endless satisfaction to myself.
For some time I have been finding it difficult to reconcile either with the current functioning of the party, or the direction in which it is going. I no longer have the feeling that this is the same idealistic party created by Dr Mookerji, Deen Dayalji, Nanaji and Vajpayeeji whose sole concern was the country, and its people. Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas.
I have decided, therefore, to resign from the three main fora of the party, namely, the National Executive, the Parliamentary Board, and the Election Committee. This may be regarded as my resignation letter.
Yours Sincerely
LK Advani
