FM rejects Baru's claims but says PM is shy, reticent

In the backdrop of a furore created by the Prine Minister's former media advisor Sanjaya Baru's book, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that Dr Manmohan Singh is reticent, withdrawn and shy by nature.

Accepting that the UPA II failed in getting across the message to the general public, Chidambaram, however, did not comment on the much criticised silence by the PM on many burning issues.

He also outrightly rejected Baru's book wherein he mentions that UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi superseded the government headed by Singh. "I don't agree with Baru's assessment. For 10 years, I have never been told by the PM to ask 10 Janpath. He never asked 10 Janpath. Only political decisions were taken by Sonia Gandhi and the party," he told CNN-IBN.

Having faced much criticism for his role as the Finance Minister, Chidambaram defended the steps taken by the Congress-led government. He in fact alleged that the economy was in a worse shape during the NDA rule.

"The worst phase of the economy was when Mr Yashwant Sinha was the Finance Minister. I have made this point more than once but the media seems to blank it out. In 2000-01 the growth rate was 4.3 per cent. In 2001-02 it further fell to 4 percent. In July 2004, Mr Vajpayee was forced to move Yashwant Sinha out of the North Block and bring in Mr Jaswant Singh," he said.

He further added, "The Congress built on the resilience of the Indian economy, took some bold decisions, we liberalised economy further and we achieved 8.5 percent growth in the first 5 years."

Moving on to the opinion polls which have predicted doom for the Congress party, Chidambaram refused to comment on their authenticity

He, however, said the media should stop speculating and wait for the counting day. "Media should not speculate; Congress may win, we hope to win and we want to win," said the senior leader.

Speaking on a third-straight win for Congress-led UPA, Chidambaram said that even as the party has not announced its PM nominee, the world knew that Rahul Gandhi would be anointed to the top post.

"The world know that he would be the PM in case Congress manages to form the government," he said.
