The Sensex gained 78.32 points to 22524.76 and the Nifty rose 21.85 points to 6742.90. About two shares advanced for every share declining on the BSE.
Petrochemical major Reliance Industries and top private sector lender ICICI Bank climbed 1.6 percent each.
Commercial vehicle maker Tata Motors and telecom operator Bharti Airtel surged 2.5-3 percent.
Drug major Cipla gained 2 percent after more than 11.3 lakh shares exchanged hands on BSE at Rs 385.85 apiece.
